Year 2007 is Visit Malaysia year, POSSIBLE?
|
The authority is correct, those people made complaint were wrong; sound familiar to you? The tourists will bring back all bad information to their own country, who suffer at the end?
Next year is the 50th anniversary for Malaysia independence. At the same time, Malaysia government was announced year 2007 as Visit Malaysia year. Big events will carry out to celebrate the anniversary and the same time promotes Malaysia tourist destinations to the world.
Well, this incident seems not helping at all but makes the thing worst. Malaysia is a POLICE state? Why yelling and pounding at 2am? Malaysia far away to civilized society? I’m confuse. You read it and please judge it.
Harassment by religious officers worrying
Oct 31, 06 1:11pm
(source: Malaysiakini)
The Christian Federation of Malaysia is troubled over a recent incident in which an elderly American couple was harassed by Muslim religious officials in the holiday island of Langkawi. The federation said that it was deeply concerned that non-Muslims were subjected to the harassment from the Kedah religious officers.
“Just recently Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi refuted allegations that Malaysia is a police state.
“An incident such as this, and many more similar actions in the past by over-zealous religious vigilante groups in the country point to the contrary,” said CFM’s executive committee in a statement.
Randall Barnhart, 62, and his wife Carole, 61, were rudely awakened in their rented apartment in the early hours of the morning earlier this month by religious officials conducting a raid on ‘khalwat’ couples.
The couple, who were on a six-week sailing holiday in Malaysia, have been married for 42 years and are Christians.
“The couple did inform the officers that they were Christians and therefore were not subjected to the rude intrusion of Islamic officers into their private premises.
“But that did not stop the intimidating behaviour of the officers,” added the federation.
Tourism minister concerned
Stating that this incident has given Malaysia a bad image, the Christian federation wanted the cabinet to take a special interest in this matter to reassure everyone that the privacy of citizens is always protected against such harassments.
The federation added that the Kedah religious department must offer an official apology to the couple.
It also called upon the Tourism Ministry to do whatever is necessary to assure tourists that they will not be subject to vigilante moral policing by religious officers.
In the wake of this incident, Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor said that he will meet and placate the American couple.
He was concerned that the incident on Langkawi, an idyllic island off Kedah promoted as a sailing hub, would affect the country’s image.
"I have communicated with Barnhart through emails and plan to meet him soon," Adnan was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times newspaper last week.
The timing of this incident could not have been much worse as the government has chosen next year to promote Malaysia as a prominent tourist destination, delcaring 2007 as the Visit Malaysia Year.
The government hopes to attract some 20.1 million tourists in 2007, up from 15.7 million in 2004.
Tourism is Malaysia's second-largest foreign exchange earner, but it is facing stiff competition from neighbours including Singapore and Thailand.
Yelling and pounding at 2am
Soon after the terrifying incident, Barnhart complained to police and the US embassy over the raid.
The raid saw officials yelling and pounding on the couple’s door at two in the morning.
Barnhart, who answered the door, said the officials demanded to see his ‘woman’ and insisted on being shown their marriage licence and passports.
He said his wife was terrified by the incident and insisted on going back to the United States.
Barnhart is also seeking an apology from Kedah state’s religious department and compensation of RM4,315.

Toward to research universities - part 4
|
Normally project supervisors will pay theirs post-graduate students from research grant if her/his students can’t get any scholarship. Some project supervisor offers high wage but not all. The wage is enough for the post-graduate student to maintain his/her basic needs but no more than that. Therefore, luxury expenses will be a dream to all post-graduate students.
Well, why it so important? You should aware that research grant is not bank in to supervisor’s bank account but University bank account. The project supervisor will allocate certain amount of money from the grant as wages to post-graduate students. The University Treasurer Department will take care about it. They will bank in the wages to post-graduate students monthly.
Now, take my former laboratory as an example. Many of us were not receive our wages in time. We already filled all documents need by the University Treasurer Department for our wages. However, those documents can be “disappeared” without any reasons. Worst, we were not informing by the department when they lost our documents. When we released that it was already middle of next month. We have to go to the department office to double check with the person in-charge several times because him/her always not in office.
Post-graduate students have to stop their research for that reason every month. You can’t expect post-graduate students don’t bother about it. They need money to service too. I believe when you are not pay for a month or two, you will not happy too. The situation sometimes became worst. Friend of mine had experienced three months without wages. The university does not offer he/she something but just asked he/she wait until next month. They will bank in those wages at once. Hello, does he/she no needs to eat, to drink, to pay rent, to pay his/her transportation fees, to pay is/her insurance, to pay his/her phone bill, electric bill, water bill?
Many of us have to look for alternative income in order to “save” ourselves when that “incident” happens again. We look for tuition. Yes, tuition. Question here, if a student has to do two things at one time, do you think he/she can perform well? Do you think he/she will not feel very exhaust? Do you think he/she will not feel sick and want to give up research in future? Do you think we are losing potential good scientist?
If Malaysia wants toward to research universities, perhaps this should under their consideration. The system waste a lot of post-graduates’ time due to this matter. Their time should spend on research and experiments but no go to the department double check for their wages. We need a proper platform to perform researches.

Sneak preview - a song for Streamyx users in Malaysia
|
A group of broadband (Streamyx) users in Malaysia have modified a Chinese song (ISP版 太委屈 Too Grievance ISP version) to express their unsatisfactory of the broadband service they got. What can we do if the business is monopolise by one company and the authority still allows the monopolise culture going on? The users already did what ever they can. The rest is beyond their power.
Currently, they still working on the song’s Music Video (ISP版 太委屈 Too Grievance ISP version Music Video). Here is the sneak preview for the song and lyrics.
Sneak preview
I would like to say, please look at the meaning behind and the message behind.

5 million M'sia Ringgit is 1.37 million USD or 1.08 million EURO
|

source:theStar

source:Sin Chew Daily
How much time you need to spend in order to get 5,000,000 Malaysia Ringgit? Assuming you get 5,000 Malaysia Ringgit pay as your monthly salary, then, you need to work for 1000 months (pay no taxes and not spend even 1 sen) in order to have this amount of money. Now, how many of Malaysians have this kind income in a month?
We have a man build a four-storey mansion (17 rooms with toilet and bathroom attached in each room) cost 5 million Malaysia Ringgit on a land (43,000 sq ft) alienated to his wife. That land is mainly for low-cost houses at Kampung Idaman, Pandamaran, Selangor, Malaysia.
Who is he? He is Port Klang assemblyman and Klang municipal councillor Datuk Zainal @ Zakaria Mat Deros. Besides, he, his son Zainuri and daughter-in-law Roselinda Abdul Jamil have been appointed Klang municipal councillors despite objections recently. Wow…great, right?
What Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo says about that “Palace”?
The first response (12th October 2006): I don’t know, I am still waiting for report. (He is the boss but he does not know anything. Poor him, right?)
The recent response (29th October 2006): Nov 8 deadline for Zakaria. (What will happen after that?)
What Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo says about that the appointment for councillor of the Klang Municipal Council?
He said: "In the regulations, it does not say that people who break the law cannot be appointed as councillors. We appoint councillors according to party positions. This is decided by the party, so anything concerning the party, we will refer back to the party management committee.
"I will follow orders which state that the appointment of councillors should be according to party positions."
What Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says about this?
He said: "I leave it to him (Khir) to take the appropriate action against Zakaria according to the necessary laws"
What is the pay for an assemblyman? How possible for an assemblyman to build 5 million Malaysia Ringgit four-storey mansion (17 rooms with toilet and bathroom attached in each room) with his “regular” salary? What ACA does here? Yes, they did something, then what? Take note here, his salary is paid from tax payers’ money! He is a government server only, a person who serves the people and not the people serve to him!
How many people in Malaysia are homeless? Let’s do a simple maths here. Assuming a house cost 100,000 Malaysia Ringgit in that area. 5 million Malaysia Ringgit can build 50 houses for 50 families! What make him qualify to stay in a Palace?
* LAWS?
Can LAWS take this kind of people down (completely) in Malaysia?
Can LAWS protect well low income Malaysians?
What to him next? Will he bring in front of justice? Will he be jailed? Will he be fined? Come on, he can build a 5 million Malaysia Ringgit “Palace”; that amount of FINE is “kacang putih” (means nothing) to him.
Malaysia has LAWS?

Why did Dr. M criticise the prime minister?
|
The full statement as below. You read, you judge it.
---------------------------------------------------
Ladies and Gentlemen,Citizens of Malaysia,
Why did I criticise the prime minister?
(click here for statement in Malay)
Because no one else is able to criticise the prime minister. He cannot be criticised by his deputy, his cabinet minister, Umno supreme council members, Menteri Besar, chief ministers, members of the Dewan Rakyat, members of the Senate, members of the state legislative council, Umno members at all levels, government officers and anyone from royalties to beggars.
The mainstream media including radio and television are not allowed to admonish the prime minister. Pre-paid telephones are now required to be registered so that anyone who transmits SMS will be known by the government and action can be taken.
The Internet and the websites will be electronically bugged and action taken against anyone who criticises the prime minister.
Anyone who attempts to hold any function that may involve criticising the prime minister will be harassed and threatened by the police and government leaders to force them to cancel the function.
I myself have been blocked using all sorts of means to stop me from criticising the prime minister.
1. I cannot be invited by Umno, non-government organisations, associations of government officers or non-government officers, universities or any other institution.
2. Umno members and the public are prevented from and advised against attending any functions or meetings where I am to speak.
3. All sorts of threats are meted out by police and political leaders to scare anyone who refuses to comply.
4. Everytime anything that involves the public takes place, the deputy prime minister and certain other quarters will forcefully advise that any criticism, comment or debate should stop.
Actions that are taken or threatened to be taken include sacking, transfer to remote areas like in Sabah, retraction or cancellation of contracts, harassment by the banks, call-up by the police, the Anti-Corruption Agency and other government enforcement agencies, detained and interrogated repeatedly.
A climate of fear has enveloped this country.
No one dares to comment, criticise or oppose anything that is done by the prime minister.
In a situation where no one can criticise the prime minister, I have to voice my criticisms on matters that do not concern my personal being, but only those that concern the interest of the religion, race and country.
Because of this I am abused by the prime minister’s henchmen including component party leaders, the mainstream media that is controlled by Kali (New Straits Times adviser Kalimullah Hassan) and Brendan (NST Group Editor Brendan Pereira) and all other government apparatus.
The questions and issues I raised have not been answered. What is being questioned is my right to comment and criticise. Attempts are made to disparage me so badly that I am made out to be of unsound mind. Repeatedly, allegations were made that the administration during my time was worse.
Their media make out that my criticisms of the prime minister are despicable and reprehensible.
Muslims should know that even the Imam can be corrected by those he leads in prayers if he reads or does something wrong.
Saidana Abu Bakar, Islam’s first Caliph, had asked to be corrected if he does something wrong, not by foreigners but by the Muslims themselves.
But the current prime minister cannot at all be commented upon, criticised or advised. He is almost a saint who is free from any human weaknesses or wrongs.
My meeting with him should be kept secret from the rakyat. And because we have met, I can no longer criticise whatever is done by the prime minister.
Because of my statement that I would continue criticising if something that is not good for the religion, race and country is done by the prime minister, all sorts of condemnations and insults are thrown by these hatchetmen and the mainstream media towards me.
Because all avenue for criticising the government has been shut, therefore I am forced to come up with this written statement so that it is not spun by anyone.
Sincerely
Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad
Malaysian Citizen and Commoner

Toward to research universities - part 3

Most laboratories in universities do not have proper fire safety system. The fire safety here is not have several fire-extinguishers attached on the wall only. The fire safety here is have a whole fire fighting system included fire-extinguishers, fire fighting blanket, smoke alarm, fire alarm, fire door, sprinklers, emergency evacuation alarm, and emergency evacuation plan. Take note here, the electrical abuse (plug multiple extension cords into another) is a fire hazard too. However, to be frank it is normal practice in many laboratories.
The university administration might say that is expensive. Well, take one laboratory near to my former laboratory as example.
A fire broke out at that laboratory on the night of 9 August 2003. A lot of post-graduate students included myself were seriously affected due to that fire. Take myself as example in this case. I kept my clones in one of the fridges at this laboratory. All 10,000 clones and several hundred clones of PCR product I have generated were burned in a night. It took me one and a half years from beginning until those clones ready for my next experiments. However, all gone due to a fire.

How about the other post-graduate students? How about the equipments were burned in the fire? According to the news reported on newspapers (we were warned not to inform any press, I don’t know who did that), the lost of that fire incident was 1.5 million Ringgit Malaysia. Mind you, MOSTI hard to give you extra research grant when you reporting fire incident happen on your research. In fact, MOSTI can’t effort to do so.
For my research, my supervisor had to spend RM30,000 from the research grant to allow me recover all 10,000 clones I have lost in that fire. The money should be spent for my further experiments but not for that reason!
When the fire happens at laboratory, I believe you agree that the lost is huge. This is a waste to the research grant (tax payers’ money) also a waste to students’ hard work and mentally abuse. Why mentally abuse? They spend so much time to get results from their experiments and they must finish their studies in certain periods also. But, a fire incident likes that, how much time they need to spend again to repeat those experiments?
How many laboratories are “affordable” to be burned? How much the research grants are “affordable” to be wasted because of this? How many post-students can “stand firm” to that kind of “mentally abuse”?
Take the example about, if we want move toward to research universities, a complete fire safety system for laboratories is a must.

Toward to research universities - part 2
|
You are aware that the water tariffs in Klang Valley will go up again. However, what about the water quality we will get?
In my former university, the tape water is yellowy like Chinese tea. I think you also aware that many houses in Malaysia have installed water filter device outside their house. You know the reason too.
We have equipment for example Millipore Milli-Q® Ultrapure Water Purification Systems which produce us the ultra pure water or reverse osmosis water for the experiment usage purpose. This equipment was connected directly to the water supply. As a result lifespan of filters inside the equipment was dramatically reduced.
Why? The water supply we get is so “clean” and the filters "work hard" to filter particles from water. The filters of that equipment are very expensive. When it broke down, a lot of experiments will seriously affect; for example microarray experiment, an experiment requires ultra pure water to carry out.
Besides, we also aware that the water supply in Malaysia or in certain area will suddenly cut off without any notice. We have this kind of nightmare before in my former laboratory. The water supply was cut off on 11 April 2003 until 18 April 2003. 8 days without water supply, 8 days! I don’t know how about now. But, I believe the problem still going on occasionally?
Yes, we did informed the University administration; but, their response were “tak apa”. Can you imagine how to conduct experiments or research without water supply in laboratory? I don’t know how many people are serious to science? How many of them are serious to this kind problems when they SHOUT loud and clear we want to become Research University!
Look at this problem; provide clean water supply to laboratories is a must. When the instrument broke down because of dirty water supply, a lot of post-graduate students will affect. Time wasted for this kind of problem is not worth. Please take this clean water supply task seriously when they SHOUT such loud and clear to become Research University.

RM100mil for varsities
PENANG: The four local universities designated as research universities will receive at least an additional RM100mil each for research, development and commercialisation activities.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said the allocation, to be disbursed early next year, would also fund the universities’ research grants and postgraduate scholarships.
The four universities are Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia.
1.The electrical supply
I dare to tell most laboratories in the universities do not have back up electrical supply. Why it so important?
Take my former laboratory as example. We have several unit of ultra low temperature freezers (-80ºC and -20ºC), several unit of thermal cycler, fridges, ultra high speed (up to 100,000 rpm) centrifuge, several unit of high speed (up to 13,000 rpm) centrifuges and so on.
The ultra low temperature freezers were use to store and kept research materials because some materials can’t simply harvest from outside or they were harvested from somewhere far away. Besides, the freezers also use to store previous students’ works like clones they have generated. These clones can be used by next student who wants to carry out further research on it. Some enzymes and kits we use are temperature sensitive. They need to store or kept in low temperature. These enzymes and kits are very expensive. Sometimes a tube of enzyme (500µL) will cost RM 6000, more expensive than a brand new 110cc motorcycle. I’m not kidding here.
My former laboratory has diesel electric generator connected to 4 power plugs only. However, the generator does not well maintain all the time. We have experienced one serious power failure start from 07 May 2003 to 08 May 2003. Previous students’ research clones and research materials inside the -80ºC freezers were seriously affected. Enzymes and kits inside one of the -20ºC freezers were destroyed during those 2 days of power failure. We estimated the lost for enzymes and kits inside that freezer were RM 30,000. Just one -20ºC freezer only we already lost RM 30,000 not yet count the time and effort students have spent to carry out their work. The power failure problem always happened in my former university. Although the electrical supply resume back after several hours, however, what about the time and effort students have carried out on their research or experiments?
Take the PCR experiments as an example here. During power failure, the enzymes in the reaction mix were destroyed because it only works under certain temperature in certain period. So, the student has to repeat the experiment effort with new enzymes, primers, solutions, and templates. What about a student spinning his/her samples in a high speed or ultra high speed centrifuge and suddenly no electrical supply? Yes, he/she has to repeat again the extraction work. Some extraction methods only function well at chilling temperature. When the power failure happened the temperature will rise too. So, you know the answer.
Does it consider a waste to the research grant because of this electrical supply problem? Research grant was wasted on this kind of problem. You can imagine now why some researchers can’t present or get more results on their research at the end of his/her studies. Back up electrical supply is important to all laboratories in all universities. The University administration always said the generator is very expensive, but, just look at the examples above (from laboratory only) how much the research grant (tax payers’ money) was wasted? Mind you, researchers do not simply get extra research grant paid by reporting this electrical problem to MOSTI.
Toward to research universities, back up electrical supply is a must for long run.
* The amount of price was based on the goods price in the year 2003. The current price now is much higher than year 2003. For an example, a sequencing kit, DYEnamic™ ET Dye Terminator Kit (MegaBACE™) was about RM 30,000 plus in the year 2003. However, same sequencing kit is RM 50,000 plus in the year 2005. This kit must store or kept in -20ºC freezer!

Bullet shield
|
On the other hand, I think we have one also in Malaysia. How about this? Sounds like a bullet shield also but we use no textbooks.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib said that the Malaysia government love the people like her children. Malaysia government understand and lend assistance to all ethnic groups with difficulty. He said other countries are not comparable how Malaysia government love and care her people.
He gave one example here, the tsunami incident happened on December 26 in the year 2004. The government immediately set up disaster relief committee, allocated relief funds and constructed temporary housing for the victims until the implementation of proper housing programmes. He said this demonstrated Malaysia government's concern for the victims.
He also mentioned some foreign experts came visit the tsunami-affected areas and they felt unbelievable the tsunami victims paying only RM (Ringgit Malaysia) 50 per month for a semi-detached house. He said they were surprised and admire the compassionate spirit Malaysia government had to the tsunami victims.
Please read the rest by your own. You may use these online translate software (here and here)to help you read the news. Either the news reporter wrote it in this way or the speech was given in that way, I don’t know.
I used to read several newspapers nowadays. Of course, I read it online. After the four Chinese dailies (Sin Chew Daily ,Guangming Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press) were owned by one guy in Malaysia, read other newspaper might help a bit on certain point of view. However, I can't find other newspapers published this news online.

MY 2 cents
|
On last Monday (09.10.2006) there was a peace protest nationwide organized by undergraduates in Finland. They request Finland parliament to raise the student allowance since the allowance hasn’t been raised during the last 14 years. Does Finland government response like Malaysia government? No. they don’t. If yes, there is political suicide.
How our government practices democracy in Malaysia? Even a peace exhibition does not allow in Malaysia because it is labeled as anti-government. Different opinions about the government policies are not allow to voice openly; different academic research report against to the government statistic does not welcome by government. We were warned to ask through a proper channel. How? Ask through an official letter? Honestly, how many questions were 100% answered well without flooding with adjectives, nouns, adverbs and pointless sentences? If the proper channel really functions well, why people look for alternative? Think.
We always heard politician critic our young generation does not care about the nation politic. However, when young generation has different opinions or doesn’t agree with the current policies, those politicians will label them as anti-government. What they are looking for actually? An army-like young generation which agree with whatever kind of policies in this nation without a question? Do you like this kind of young generation become your government in future? Every person has his own opinion(s) and his stand on certain matter(s). It is not fair to label those people don’t agree with government as anti-government, not royal to Malaysia. It is not democracy. I believe you aware sometimes children also not agree with their parents at certain matter, right? So, should these kids be labeled as anti-parents by their parents?

Do you "sense" something?
|
We heard loud and clear the Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was criticised seriously against the current government lead by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The day before, we SUDDENly heard about Dr Mahathir was agreed to meet Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to end a damaging public row before the Hari Raya festival.
Meanwhile, we also SUDDENly heard about the MCA confirmed to sell off 21.02 % of its controlling 44.4 percent stake in Nanyang Press Holdings (the owner of Chinese dailies Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press) to Ezywood.
Today
Datuk Lim Ah Lek said that the former MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik must bear the full responsibility for the actions bought over the Nanyang Press in the past. He should apologize to the Malaysia Chinese society and MCA members.
Former health minister and MCA vice-president Chua Jui Meng appears to be the first 'casualty' of the new Chinese media monopoly by business tycoon Tiong Hiew King.
Four Chinese dailies (Sin Chew Daily ,Guangming Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press) owned by Tiong were conspicuously absent from the launching of a beauty salon owned by former beauty queen Jcqlyne Chin in Petaling Jaya, where Chua was the guest of honour.

For Malaysia to become a truly developed nation
|
Politics is dynamic as is economy; it can be very unpredictable at times. Politicians, being the players in this complex game of mind, have to be extremely careful before making their move. There are several possibilities behind the "sudden awakening" of the Gerakan leaders. It could be that they are trying to make themselves relevant, as suggested by several readers. May be. But isn't that what they are supposed to do? Instead of dwelling on the past and attacking them for what they didn't or possibly couldn't have done, we should try to understand the reasons leading to the current situations, identify the problems at hand, provide more constructive suggestions and work together towards creating a better society.
No doubt the current developments: the sacking and public humiliation of Anwar, the wide-spread of corruptions, and etc., have created an undercurrent of resentment against the present government. This, coupled with the highly-lamented lack of leadership of Pak Lah, has, for good or for bad, opened up space for more debates.
Our nation's political landscape is shifting, both for the better and for the worse.
The fact that more and more people are starting to question the government in general, and UMNO in particular, on various issues is indeed an encouraging development. For Malaysia to become a truly developed nation, she needs to produce more, not only critical, but responsible citizens. A critical citizen does not necessarily make a responsible citizen. But an uncritical or compliant citizen is never a responsible citizen. Hence, having more and more citizens with critical minds is the first step towards creating a responsible society.
The probable bad news is that, with increased demand for transparency and discontent over political, economical and social injustice, even from among the Malay masses, the government might resort to more aggressive means in order to stay in power.
Having said that, I am still optimistic that the younger generation, with more exposure to the outside world, will not be swayed easily but are able to handle issues in a more rational way. The economical and social landscapes have changed vastly over the years, owing in large part to the NEP. But the present government has certainly overstayed their welcome. Hopefully one day when the people decide to vote out this corrupted government, all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, will remain cool-headed.
BTW, just came accross this article and think it's worth reading.

Q: This is a warning to the groups? The ASLI (Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute) report is an academic report, a scientific report, a data report which several mathematic methodologies were conducted. There are many methodologies to conduct a research, please understand this. The report just likes theses written by researchers in Universities after their scientific research have done. Please understand what thesis mean is. The different here is most of theses were kept in Universities library without public reachable and ASLI report was published to public.
A: To anyone. Don’t twist (the matter). Malays or others, don’t kacau (cause trouble). If you want to ask, ask properly. Don’t buat kacau (cause trouble). Our country is peaceful. God does not make problems by causing typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, but human beings want to make problems, for what? We are very peaceful. If there is a problem, discuss it properly. That is important.
There is no patience now for problems, and there are those who want to find problems. Instigate, insinuate, want to make innuendos. There are no benefits to such actions.
Full story at here
I have read a research paper which conducted at University of Oxford regarding the New Economic Policy (NEP) in Malaysia. Besides, there are a series of research papers on New Economic Policy and public easy to get to. Now, what Malaysia Government will act about this?
Who takes advantage at this matter? Who use hard word to a scientific report? Read the news* published on local newspapers and then ask it yourself honestly from your deep heart.

The only thing not raise at all times in Malaysia is SALARY
|

Before this, we heard about the proposal to rise several highways* toll in Klang Valley. Now, water tariffs will go up by 15% for Klang Valley consumers who use more than 35 cubic metres per month. However, residents in Klang Valley said give them clean water first.
Well, someone claimed that this rise was “WIN WIN” situation because it will not affect the households but factories or others. Please answer the question honestly here. If you are the factory operator and the water bill of yours factory is rise, will you add it to the costs of production or you bear it? You will, right? Then, the costs of the goods are rise also. Well, the prices of the goods will rise too. So, the chain reactions continue. The residents in Malaysia are facing another round of goods prices rise. How many of them? Does it consider as WIN WIN situation? I really not good in economic, maybe I’m wrong.
Change your life styles, message from our Deputy Prime Minister.

Uncivilized businessman
|
The car wash operator was arrested, however, is out on bail. He had called Yun Chong’s colleague who has become witnesses to this UNCIVLIZED matter. He told him with threatening language that he had been released and soon the police will go to arrest Yun Chong. Well, let’s see what police will do on this. I would like to suggest Yun Chong’s colleague lodge a police report about the threaten phone call. You see, how dare he is? He doesn’t feel ashamed about what he had done but threat the witnesses. Does it means he is rich (not really, I don’t think so), so, he can acts like the emperor? We can find many this kind of person in Malaysia. This kind of person doesn’t know how big the world is. He/she just assume he/she is richer than the other, everything can be settled with money. Well how rich he/she is? A Millionaire? A Billionaire?

Are we far behind to a civilized society?
|

This morning when I read this news from newspapers online, I was shocked. This is an UNCIVILIZED action. The employee may done something wrong as his boss claimed, BUT, who authorize he can flog on his employee, a human being? This is another bad example threatens a person like animal, another bad example for uncivilized action.
No such laws or acts stated that the boss can. If his boss discovers his employee is stealing his company money (as he claimed), then lodge a report at police station. Let’s police do their job. They are the proper people in the nation to enforce the laws not that boss.
Car wash worker caned over RM10,000 theft
A car wash operator here allegedly “flogged” his supervisor with a cane, stopping only after the 18-year-old agreed to sign an IOU note for RM10,000. The operator was said to have resorted to the drastic action after he suspected that Lee Yun Chong had stolen the money from the centre since January.

Several good points we should consider carefully
|
If a politician who living in the house cost 200 million Ringgit Malaysia, spent 20 million Ringgit Malaysia to install the security system. But, he keeps saying that he will defend your interests. I advise you to reconsider. The truth is the money used is your money (taxpayer’s money).
If the politician keep saying you are the world's first-class citizens, the citizens whose have privileges; but the fact is you only can afford to have two mackerel fish on the table, I advise you to reconsider.
If some people in their communities afford to organize the Hollywood-style wedding, or be able to pay 100 million Ringgit Malaysia for compensation divorce, however, you only can live in a small atap house which you are almost hard to stretch out your legs, I advise you to reconsider.
If a politician tells you that Ah Meng, the owner of a small factory or Sami, the owner of the restaurant is a threat to your economic livelihood, but on the other hand some politicians have a lot of money to spend, I advise you to reconsider.

Only he is the most careful ones
|
The Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) should be more careful when publicising future reports that touch on issues of race and other sensitive matters, said Umno Youth deputy head Khairy Jamaluddin. He said this today, when asked to comment on Asli president Mirzan Mahathir’s retraction of a disputed report on bumiputera corporate equity ownership.* Only he does not “draw up a report that triggers anger (among many people)” and then NOT simply admit to having made mistakes. Only he does not make the damage, he is perfect.
“Let’s not draw up a report that triggers anger (among many people) and then simply concede to having made mistakes. The damage is done already,” he said. “I feel that before we make any reports public, we have to be careful with the methodology that we use. More so when we try to question the methodology used by the government in official documents. *
“It was not a good methodology (as cited in the report), it was not fair, perhaps it was inappropriate and ultimately, it has been proven to be baseless.”(source: Malaysiakini)
04 September 06, Malaysiakini
The former premier said Khairy, who is also Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s son-in-law, had not done anything concrete besides making racist remarks.
“What have they done? They are in full power now. They can grab (Penang Chief Minister Dr Koh) Tsu Koon by the scruff of his neck and throw him into the sea because they are so powerful.
“But they haven’t done anything other than make racist speeches in order to gain popularity with the Malays. He is entitled (to make such statements). All those who are in support of the government can freely voice their opinions. Those who don’t, cannot say anything,” he added.
On 03 September 06, Malaysiakini
Khairy accused the predominantly-Chinese Gerakan state government for marginalising the minority Malays in Penang island, driving them to move to the mainland – to both Butterworth and Kedah’s Sungai Petani - during a Putera Umno launch in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. According to Khairy, the marginalisation of the minority Malays in the island was why Umno had raised the issue of rotating the Penang chief minister post so that their rights could be safeguarded.
On 27 August 06, Malaysiakini
Khairy said he would not apologise as demanded by MCA Youth, according to Sin Chew Daily evening edition today.
The Umno Youth deputy chief argued that any action that “upholds the dignity of religion and the interest of ethnic community” does not require an apology.
Khairy added that Umno Youth must remain firm on its stand, even on matters involving other BN component parties.
"Many people say our criticism is too harsh, provocative and extreme, but this does not matter as we are upholding our religious dignity and pride. So why should I apologise?" said Khairy.
On 21 August 06, the Star
Khairy: “Leaders from the other parties may have misinterpreted my statement.” He was referring to a report in a Chinese daily* that quoted several leaders criticising him for allegedly saying that non-Malays would take advantage of a weak UMNO to make demands.(one chinese daily? Look at the picture. Why only chinese newspapers published it?)
Citing issues raised by the Chinese election watch group Su Qiu in the 1999 elections, Khairy said: “Umno was weak at that time and people took advantage of that.”

"When we export oxygen, you don’t say anything; when we export haze, you complain."
"We have forests producing oxygen and bringing clean air to them but they don't thank us. Now there's smoke and they complain. There must be a balance."
We have our minister now. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said that Malaysia and Indonesia are friendly neighbour. Malaysia will not bring the haze matter to the International Tribunal. He said Malaysia and Indonesia will continue to hold TALKS and discussions aimed at smoke and haze.
He also said that what can we get when bring Indonesia to the International Tribunal and he mentioned that protest was useless also.
Well, as our Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told us "When something like this happens, we have to ask for God's help,". So, we are good, we are not naughty; what we can do when the HAZE from our lovely neighbour visit us are pray, pray, pray hard for rain.

Indon embassy official annoys anti-haze group
Beh Lih Yi
Oct 10, 06 3:28pm
“If you can guarantee the wind will not blow (in this direction), then I can guarantee it (haze) will not happen again.”
This was the response of a top official at the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur after receiving a memorandum today from opposition party DAP, protesting the deteriorating air quality in Malaysia.
First secretary (political affairs), who goes by the single name Mudzakir (photo), received the two-page document on behalf of the mission from DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. Ambassador KPH Rusdihardjo and his deputy Abdul Rahman Muhamad Fachir, were not at the embassy.
The group held a 20-minute closed-door meeting with Mudzakir, to ask for an assurance that the Indonesian government would take steps to ensure that the haze will not recur.
Mudzakir also told the annoyed group: “When we export oxygen, you don’t say anything; when we export haze, you complain.”
He appeared to have repeated similar remarks made yesterday by Indonesia's Forestry Minister Malem Sambat Kaban.
""We have forests producing oxygen and bringing clean air to them but they don't thank us. Now there's smoke and they complain. There must be a balance," Malem was quoted by news agency Reuters.
Conveying the remarks to reporters outside the embassy later, DAP leader Lim said: “I am disappointed. I think I will have to visit the embassy again next year.”
This was in reference to the non-committal response which, he argued, would lead to recurrence of the problem.
‘Unfriendly act’
Lim urged the Indonesian government to ratify the Asean Transboundary Haze Agreement immediately. Indonesia, the main source of the haze, remains the only country yet to ratify the plan signed in June 2002 and which came into force in November the following year.
“Refusal to ratify is incomprehensible, irresponsible and an unfriendly act when (the Indonesian) government’s repeated assurances of action to prevent recurrence of the haze have been hopelessly ineffective,” he said.
Lim said Indonesia should not feel ashamed to seek help from other countries to put out the fires caused by open burning to clear land each year.
Any further delay could result in fatalities from accidents due to low visibility or because of exposure to smog among vulnerable groups including the elderly, he said.
Lim expressed anger over an accident in Negri Sembilan yesterday, where three men were killed and four people were injured due to poor visibility. The state was the worst affected by haze yesterday, with the air pollutant index reading close to the ‘very unhealthy’ level.
“Stop the killing of your own people and your neighbours now,” he said, in comments targeted at the Indonesian government.
Indonesian moves
Lim further criticised Malaysia and Asean for their “failure” to take sufficient action to compel Indonesia to ratify the regional haze agreement.
“We want to see serious and concerted efforts in handling this issue - not only are Malaysians suffering, but Indonesians as well. The Malaysian government should send a protest note to Jakarta,” he said.
Urging the government to send a stronger signal, Lim stressed that it could not sit back and merely “resort to praying” for rain to improve the air quality.
The 12-member DAP delegation comprised leaders and members including Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.
Wearing masks, they held up a banner that read ‘Keep our skies blue! Sign now!’. A dozen police personnel kept close watch, but the protest passed without incident.
Mudzakir, when contacted by malaysiakini later, said the embassy would forward the memorandum to Jakarta today. He confirmed he had made the remarks that had annoyed the DAP delegation.
“This (haze) is not just a man-made phenomenon, but also involves natural factors. Yes, I said that if I had the power to direct the wind not to blow here, then I could give them an assurance - but I can’t, right?” he argued.
In a statement issued today, the embassy expressed concern over the situation in Malaysia and said it hoped this would return to normal as soon as possible.
It said the Indonesian government has taken several steps to reduce the hot spots, including sending over 1,000 firefighters to put out the fires and carrying out cloud-seeding.
On ratification of the Asean haze agreement, it said the issue is being debated in Parliament.

All-round support for DBP to have power to fine**
There was all-round support for Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka (DBP) to have the power to advise and fine those not using the national language correctly on signboards.(source: theStar)
Malaysia to Levy Fines for Poor Speech
Malaysia will levy fines on those incorrectly using the national language, and will set up a specialized division to weed out offenders who mix Malay with English, news reports said Thursday. Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Rais Yatim said fines of up to 1,000 ringgit ($271) can be imposed on displays with any wrong or mutated form of Malay(source:Yahoo! ASIA)
The Cabinet has given the Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (DBP) the power to advise and fine anyone not using the national language correctly on signboards. “DBP can now enforce the correct usage of the national language on the public and private sectors,” Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim told reporters at a press conference at his office yesterday. Rais said for a start, DBP would advise anyone found using the language wrongly. Anyone refusing to follow an order by the DBP director-general can be fined up to RM1000. (source: theStar)
Well…great. It seems like another “income” for the Malaysia government?? The grammar of the national language I have learned during my school time was considered wrong nowadays. I have compared this with my younger brother. Yet, the grammar of the national language my father had learned during his school time was consider wrong if compared to the grammar I have learned. So, tell me which version of grammar is correct? The language is kept on reviewing from time to time. Then, can you kindly please tell me who can follow the grammar in this case? The businessmen?
Okay, they need to consult DBP all the time for the proper national language use on their business signboards. Well, is the consultation free of charge or have to pay? How long DBP will takes to response on it?
We already have many, many, many rules and many, many, many procedures to go trough to get a business licence. I still remember a huge and famous IT company from India told our Deputy Prime Minister they gave up to setup their IT company branch in Malaysia because we have some many, many, many, many procedures to go for a business licence. Are we really serious to our economy?
** Have they ask those businessmen?

How many years already we have this kinds of problem? For what I can recall, in the year 1997 we have to wear mask when we were outside. Almost a decade, Malaysia or ASEAN can’t even get something done? How much we effort to lost? Airport has to shut down because the visibility is too low; people have to reduce outdoor activities; daily activities reduce to minimum level; people getting sick etc. I’m not very good in economic, however, does this effect our economy?
I’m confused. When someone touches about 30% policy, someone will react faster than thunder. When someone touches about the priority policy, someone will jumping up and down faster than thunder. The haze “visit” Malaysia every year, someone will say “we will discuss with Indonesia” A decade discussion, never ending discussion. Perhaps when open burning is from Singapore then we will get response faster from someone???

‘I am sorry’ will cost billions Ringgit Malaysia?
|
Youth leaders in the Barisan Nasional will explain to their members the recent remarks made by Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
At the same time, Barisan Youth leader Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein advised those who want to speak on issues touching on Malaysia’s plural society to be careful so that their statements will not be misinterpreted. Khairy was criticised by several Barisan parties for his remarks in August that non-Malay parties would take advantage of a weak Umno.
Hishammuddin said parties like the MCA and Gerakan had criticised Khairy and demanded an apology from him because no in-depth explanation was made at that time to give a clearer picture of the situation.(source: theStar)
No apologies but only explanation that was given by Umno deputy youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today to his fellow Barisan Nasional youth leaders over his racial remarks in August.
His remarks had then sparked off intense reaction from the Chinese community, including from the members of the Chinese-based MCA and Gerakan - two of the leading coalition partners in BN. Since then, it was widely expected that Khairy will apologise over his remarks at the BN youth council meeting today.
However after a three-hour meeting involving youth leaders from all 12 coalition partners, BN youth chairperson Hishammuddin Hussein reported that the youth council have resolved to “work together” and to put the incident behind them, and had described the meeting as a success.
“It’s about sincerity, and the spirit of co-cooperation. The relationship between the youth members need to be built on so there is no misunderstanding while we carry out our duties,” he told reporters after chairing the meeting.(source: Malaysiakini)
Do you read any sentence said that “I’m sorry” from someone? No, you don’t.
Other societies, parties said: “we are hurt from your racial remarks, we want apology” someone said: “no apology needs” Even Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew has said sorry for alleging Malaysia discriminated against its ethnic Chinese minority, but not the son-in-law.
Several MINISTERS and Deputy MINISTERS can’t beat a son-in-law… this is Malaysia. Who in-charge actually?

They really work on MV for the song
|
On last week, a group of broadband (Streamyx) users in Malaysia have modified a song (ISP版 太委屈 Too Grievance ISP version) to express their unsatisfactory of the broadband service they got. They already did whatever they can. They called the TM net customer service centre and repeat all the steps requested by the staff. Obviously, they still don’t get better internet connection. Currently, they are working on the song’s Music Video (ISP版 太委屈 Too Grievance ISP version Music Video). The storylines are ready and also the singer(s) (here). I think they are going for video shooting soon. They still have problem with their internet connection. However, they still have to pay full amount for the service. Why? Because according to TM net terms, the service they provide is based on a "best effort" basis. Why don’t go for other Internet Service Provider? A good question, the answer is the TM Net has monopoly the business until the last miles in Malaysia. Take it of leave it. Why monopoly allowed? Ask Malaysia Government.
The broadband service provided by TM net is lousy? When internet connection problem occur, customer calls the TM net customer service centre. The staff will ask the customer to unplug the RJ45 and phone cable from the modem first then switch off the modem. Wait for a moment; plug in those cables to the modem and then switch on the modem again. If the problem still present, the staff will asked about the network card customer has and also the manufacture brand of the modem.

Khalid called for the abolishment of the New Economic Policy
|
Below is part of the interview, get your Malaysiakini subscription to read the full story.
Why the sudden change of heart?
In the early years of my career, I was among the people who initiated the implementation of the NEP and also created the institutions that act as bumiputera distributing arms in the corporate sector. Some people have been surprised as a former promoter of the NEP, I am now ignoring the vehicle to advance the Malays.
The concept of the NEP is really just affirmative action. Of course affirmative is trying to correct certain perceived imbalances in the economy. In fact, the definition for affirmative action is very clear - it’s called positive discrimination. It’s when you discriminate against people to resolve the disparity between communities to reach a level of an even playing field. So I think it was quite clear back then.
But now, the NEP has been vulgarised by a small section of the bumiputera community in terms of corporate enhancement. The NEP now is becoming a scheme to enhance the income and also the wealth of certain selected members of the community through references to secure all the contract give-outs and so forth.
It becomes so embarrassingly clear that this vehicle of NEP has been catered specifically to certain sections and groups of people. For example, we see that in the contract to supply computers to schools; the people who got the contracts have no experience in handling computers. And yet they become the front runners and it is sub contracted out.
So there is abuse in terms of not getting the right products delivered, resources that have been thrown out due to inefficiency, distribution to these schools have not been fully utilised and as a result, it is an enormous waste. Now the selected people have become so-called world players in terms of cyber cities and so forth.
If the NEP is not doing what it’s supposed to do, then what is it being used for?
It is a known secret that all division heads of Umno have a chance to get contracts from the government in order for them to fund their political activities. They became Malay rent collectors used by non-Malays to become front runners to get these projects. And it becomes a habit and a norm rather than an exception.
Now the whole country is in a mess. In fact, if you take notice, the on-going exchanges between (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) and Dollah Badawi (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) are centred on the failure of contract handouts rather than the poor or the marginalised people. The debate has left out the poor people of Sabah for example, where statistics show a very high percentage of poverty.
We do see that the NEP has become a tool for securing income, unearned income for those who don’t do work. It’s really a free income for those who have connections with the government. The after effect is that there is so much loss in government expenditure that the taxpayers are not getting the value on the expenditure made.
The NEP is not being updated, compared to other institutions that were set up in the early days like PNB, Tabung Haji, Felda, Tabung Angkatan Tentera. Unlike the NEP, these other institutions are moving forward in a steady way. They had wanted to create so-called Malay corporate leaders and entrepreneurs when in fact it’s very hard to find them now. Those who are the super corporate entrepreneurs now, in terms of world class standards, you don’t get bumiputera or Malay names.
You get names like T Ananda Krishnan, Yeoh Tiong Lay, Lim Goh Tong and Robert Kuok (laughs) ... I think the whole of Malaysia enjoys the NEP because the NEP is not going to the Malays.
In our discussion on the NEP ... participants were telling us since the early 1980s and 90s they (the top businessmen) were constructing companies and building real estates and so forth. They became major players, the companies grew from millions to billions. But until today, they are just sub-contractors in Malaysia.
But if you analyse them (the major players) in a cynical manner, their success (is founded on the ability) to use the Malays to get contracts, and they benefited enormously from that. This is the seed of corruption...These sub-contractors now have to increase their cost in order to compensate the bribe they pay the runners to get those contracts.
Can you imagine this in Malaysia that wants to have more corporate governance, to become a highly regarded transparent nation? I think the NEP has in fact destroyed us, corrupted the whole thing. That’s why we say, hey, it doesn’t please a lot of Malays, it also doesn’t please the Chinese or Indians, and it also destroys the good character of how we to do business. People have been saying it’s only about implementation, but it has already taken the character of the devil (laughs). We cannot do with this. That’s why it deserves to be cut off.
This instrument is going to be one that will kill us and kill the nation. It has became a cancer of society. And to solve the problem of cancer, we cut it off.
The fight within Umno is on how they’re getting the best of the NEP. The 3,000 (Umno delegates) control the destiny of the nation. Ask people in the villages, they’ll tell you they wouldn’t know that they have big contracts waiting for them.
How would things be like if the NEP is abolished or modified ...
Now, if it wasn’t for the NEP, we could have achieved better growth because of the better ability to use resources. We could have an additional three or four percent in annual growth. If you look at Singapore or Malaysia, they started off about the same time, that means the per capita income in both countries were about the same. Now, Malaysia’s just below US$5,000 but Singapore’s US$21,000.
What does this mean? Should we be discussing about the NEP? The logic of the technical economic argument shows that the NEP hindered growth, while the proponents of the NEP during my period (said it ) was to create political stability. Without political stability, there is no environment for industrial growth.
But the environment has changed, foreign investors are afraid of coming in. Investors have to consider this renter class that is going to tax you 30 percent. I think the NEP has also condoned the lack of professionalism in governing and management, meaning it doesn’t care whether you are efficient or not, when you distribute to your friend. You can charge a higher price.
In order to hide all these mismanaged activities, the government is not being transparent. The government still relies on the OSA (Official Secrets Act) to hide the inefficiencies. Now there is no separation between the executive, legislature and judiciary in order for there to be check and balance.
In fact, the government has become a collusion with everybody rubbing each other’s back. Certain ministries and civil servants must be cunning enough to adjust some of the requirements of general order in order to accommodate the giving of these concessions.
And of course the politicians have to collude with the executive in order for them to have free trips to play golf in exotic places under the pretext of trying to set up real estate investment and study tours.
During the Anwar (Ibrahim) case, you can see this relationship (between the executive, legislature and judiciary). They became one team. That’s where we are now, the result of trying to implement the NEP ... a creature that is going to destroy the future generation of Malays.

Do you agree police can take yours SIM card?
|

Sin Chew Daily reported that the police have the right to inspect the mobile phones of those who behave suspiciously – and, if need be, confiscate their SIM cards, but several groups are against such action.I don’t agree police can inspect my SIM card anytime when they suspect to. It sounds like no privacy and against human rights in this nation. They should show the legal document before they do this but not at a roadblock or based on suspect. Possible we will get 101 reasons to suspect?
The debate stemmed from a complaint by a motorist who said he had to hand over his SIM card to the police during a roadblock.
The paper quoted Federal CID deputy director II (Administration) Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan as saying that the police could charge those who refuse to give up their SIM cards.
“The police will check if a person’s mobile phone contains pornographic materials and malicious rumours,” he said. However, he declined to comment if such a move was against a person’s rights.(source: theStar)
Do you agree this? What is your opinion? I’m confused here; recently, we can read crime news reported in mainstream newspaper almost everyday. Police spokesmen told us police is lacking of man power to fight for crime. Should they concentrate more to fight crimes rather than ask for your SIM card?
Possible Why The Cops Are Still The 'Kings' is right?

“Blogger beware” on 29th September 2006
|
A month later, the editor of The Edge filed a complaint against Screenshots (JeffOoi) at MCMC because of one of the comments on his blog by his reader. After that, one RED banner has appeared on his blog for all the time. Now, Umno secretary-general Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said "leadership wanted to send a clear signal to all".
The UMNO supreme council sacked Abd Zarin Mohd Yassin for criticising the party and its leadership, especially the president, through his blog Sang Kelembai.
Umno secretary-general Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said the disciplinary committee proposed that Abd Zarin be suspended but the "leadership wanted to send a clear signal to all". (source: Malaysiakini 29th September 2006)
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said the sacking had nothing to do with the Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad issue.
“He came out with comments in his Sang Kelembai blog which ran down the party and the leadership, including the president, on countless occasions.” Asked if this was a warning to other bloggers who are Umno members, he said: “Possibly”. “It sends a clear message,” he said.
